Gli antichi Romani, diventati padroni di tutto il mondo conosciuto, inventarono per la propria città un'origine divina, attribuendo al fondatore, Romolo, la discendenza dal dio Marte. Il racconto è legendario, ma le ricerche archeologiche confermano che il primo insediamento abitativo sulla riva sinistra del Tevere risale all'ottavo secolo a.C.
Dopo un periodo di soggezione agli Etruschi, gli abitanti di Roma riuscirono ad affrancarsi e, alleandosi con i Sabini, a sottomettere tutte le popolazioni allora conosciute.
I Romani, pur essendo un popolo prevalentemente guerriero, riusciro a sviluppare una civiltà molto avanzata assorbendo e rielaborando tutte le civiltà con le quali vennero a contatto

Come capitale dell' impero più esteso dell'antichità, Roma fu adornata con splendidi edifici pubblici, monumenti e templi dedicati a tutte le divinità conosciute.
Durante il regno del primo imperatore, Cesare Augusto, nacque Gesù Cristo e con la rivelazione del Dio dei cristiani ebbe inizio un'era nuova. L'impero di Roma continuò per quasi cinque secoli e nel frattempo la città divenne il centro di diffusione della nuova religione cristiana, poiché Pietro, capo degli apostoli, aveva posto la sua sede in Roma, sempre mantenuta dai suoi successori.

Roma è conosciuta in tutto il mondo come la città del Papa e per questo richiama molti pellegrini, ma è meta molto ambita anche dagli appassionati di tutte le arti poiché nel susseguirsi dei secoli vi si sono accumulati immensi tesori artistici.
